🌊 Another significant milestone in the protection of the Ocean as the #UNGA adopted with overwhelming support a resolution on establishing a commission to prepare the first COP for the High Seas Agreement #BBNJ . 🇧🇪 Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU 2024 took the floor for 🇪🇺 and reiterated its importance.

I applaud the positive vote & full support for the EU ratification of the High Seas Treaty #BBNJ aiming to protect 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030.

Now we must bring along all international counterparts to ratify it as fast as possible!

🇧🇪 Belgium is a candidate to host the secretariat of the #BBNJ agreement.

Did you know that we took an active part in the negotiations regarding the treaty enabling the protection of #biodiversity in the high seas?

I am very happy to announce that today we approved the #BBNJ Agreement at the European Parliament. I was honored to be part of the Portuguese delegation as an advisor for so many years, and now to be a Member of the European Parliament for this historical vote

An overwhelming vote for BBNJ in the United Nations today. The General Assembly voted 164-2 to approve the resolution to establish a preparatory commission to prepare for entry into force of the BBNJ Agreement. And spoiler amendments similarly - only gained 5 or 6 votes.

#UNGA will vote on establishing a Preparatory Committee for the #BBNJ #HighSeasTreaty . There have been extensive, open consultations – but 2 amendments have been introduced that would significantly weaken the resolution text.
