Today, on World Day for Laboratory Animals, we recognize the role that benthic inverts play as forensic tools in the study of ecosystem health. Our lab appreciates them today and every day.

It’s fantastic to see these exceptional specimens of Ptychodus published, which confirm that it’s a pelagic galeomorph and not a benthic hybodont. However, I’m highly skeptical that it’s a lamniform like the authors suggest.

It's been 4 years since the description of Scaphokogia totajpe, one of the most strange cetaceans from the neogene, it had different habits from its modern relatives being probably a benthic feeder that lived closer to the shore.

Chtonobdella limbata is a species of leech found in freshwater habitats, particularly in North America. Recognized by its distinct coloration and segmented body, it is a benthic predator preying on small invertebrates. These leeches play a role in aquatic ecosystems by…

Plectronocerida is the most basal clade of cephalopods - unlike their ancestors plectronocerids had siphuncles regulating amount of gas in their chambered shells to help in locomotion, but still are considered rather benthic.

Research on electromagnetic fields (EMF) & potential impact on marine organisms highlights concerns about underwater cable systems. Studies indicate that EMF exposure can influence the development & behavior of benthic invertebrates, including species like lobsters and crabs.

Walvis Ridge is an ocean chain of seamounts in the southern Atlantic Ocean. From 2007 to 2009 three oceanocgraphic cruises organised by the Instituto Español de Oceanografía and Namibia studied this area. Currently our research group is working on samples of the benthic community of this area.

Nudibranchs are benthic animals, crawling over the substrate. Exceptions include the neustonic Glaucus nudibranchs, which float just under the ocean's surface, and the pelagic nudibranchs that swim in the water column.

What can the new Hyperspectral Imaging (HI) ROV do?

· Works in two modes: sea-ice and benthic scanning (two highly interconnected worlds).

· Every frame of the high frequency imager is timestamped via GPS clock to acoustically provided underwater position and attitude.
