👀 The 4-member council majority and city manager’s actions continue to plunge Burien deeper into crisis

Last night, the Burien City Council voted to remove Planning Commission chair Charles Schaefer for aiding unhoused community members who faced displacement.
This morning, 5 other planning commission members and and airport committee member have resigned in protest of the decision

After last night's Special Meeting of the Burien City Council in which Planning Commission Chair Charles Schaeffer was removed from the Planning Commission by a 4-3 vote, five Planning Commissioners quit this morning and shared why. 🧵

With this update, the South End #Xfinity outage will put all of Renton, Kent, SeaTac, Burien, & South Seattle out of internet/tv services for 24hrs with:

• no reason what caused the outage
• no consistent time when it will be back
• no approx. numbers affected (I asked)

Completely unacceptable behavior from the Burien City Mayor & Council who appear to be so caught up in ideologically-driven hatred for the unhoused that they appear ready to leave $1 million in county funding for shelter on the table opting instead to do nothing.

What’s happening in Burien is alarming.

Hugo Garcia asked to add this letter to the agenda last night, but was told amending a Special Meeting agenda was out of order.

Community members giving public comment at the meeting were also asking the Council to discuss SOLUTIONS instead of SCAPEGOATING.

At about 1:30 this afternoon the final “regular” planning commissioner resigned. Burien now has 1 “alternate” planning commissioner.

Over 13+ hours and, from what I've seen, no one in the Seattle, Kent, Renton, Burien, SeaTac area has gotten answers or services from #Xfinity or Xfinity Support other than bots asking for DMs - which then give no real answers.

This morning I resigned from the Burien Planning Commission along with many of my colleagues. The special meeting of the Burien City Council last night was an appalling display to punish our chair for helping our unhoused neighbors, while they do absolutely nothing.

I forgot one of the strangest aspects of the Council's decision to remove Schaeffer from the Planning Commission: They had already put out a statement, months before, saying that he was acting as a private citizen, not as a public official.

We have to address the resources offered by King County to have a temporary burien based shelter and stop kicking this can down the road.

Problem solving actions will reassure our commissioners, city staff, and community members.

We have now received resignation letters from 11 commissioners including the majority of the only legally required one…. Planning commission.

Votes have consequences and as a former chair of two commissions this is exactly why I was opposed to this action.
