Today I went to Tamagawa Sengen Shrine in Ota Ward, Tokyo. The deity is Konohanasakuya Himenomikoto. A shrine is said to start when Hojo Masako worshiped the statue of Sho Kanzeon Bodhisattva in prayer for the safety of her husband, Minamoto no Yoritomo.

Where does the name 'Sendai' come from?

One story has it that it came from the small temple dedicated to thousand (sen) bodies (tai) of Kanzeon bodhisattva.
