The minaret of Jam (built in the 12th century), with a height of 65 meters, is the second tallest brick minaret in the world after the Qutub Minar. It stands in the province of Ghor. The minaret and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2002.
During the Abbasid period, the governor working under them would build the Qubbat al-Khaznah to house the mosque's funds as well as some old manuscripts. Al-Muqaddasi also credits the Abbasids for building the northern minaret during the reign of Abbasid Caliph al-Ma'mun.
