John Bockmann I do agree with Dr Anand that's there's a lot of conceptual sloppiness between nociception and pain.
Others have noted the same.

MissAnthrope '...what was denied was [not just infant pain but] the detrimental effect of nociception.'
Sorry, but that's roughly the opposite of what Anand's passage says. Anand proposes nociception because it's important and everyone can agree on it.
Interesting that he still calls it…
John Bockmann Now of course they have markers, some of which loosely correlate with nociception, some that don't.
They can't use EEG or NIRS routinely-it's not valid on its own anyway. That's not how pain works.
But we can't ask so we need better measures

John Bockmann NICU staff report difficulty with assessing pain based on behavioural and physiological indicators.
And responses can be the same for noxious and innocuous stimuli

We don't generally treat pain. Most tools measure nociception and pain is untreated.
John Bockmann 'The focus on pain perception in neonates..differentiation from nociceptive activity and..accompanying physiologic responses..obscured...that nociception is important..regardless of any philosophical view on consciousness and 'pain perception' in newborns'

Reveri Tim Ferriss Thanks, I really appreciated your simple but profound description of pain. Many pain neuroscience experts eg Mosely deny the fact you need nociception to feel pain - they are obsessed with the salience part. Bud Craig’s work on interoception and pain is a game changer !
John Bockmann Oh no, they didn't just deny pain.
Historically what was denied wás the detrimental effect of nociception.
That's what Dr. Anand was talking about in his seminal work on neonatal pain.
