Private renters receiving & will still be in deep housing stress even with the 10% increase because their payments are so low. And most people receiving JobSeeker & Youth Allowance don’t get Rent Assistance at all.

Property investors, developers and the banks will be celebrating Labor’s housing budget tonight that dishes out $175 billion in tax handouts for property investors. But for renters, mortgage holders and first home buyers it is a massive kick in the teeth.

Construction of I95 in Miami required the forcible relocation of over 12,000 residents—nearly 100% of them black. Using eminent domain, the gov't seized buildings across the heart of Miami's black community in Overtown, offering owners well below market rate—and renters nothing.

Low income renters on rent assistance are not “winners” cos they will get $9 a week more. Rents went up $56 a week on average last year alone and are expected to go up another $46 this year. $102 average increase in rent vs $9 increase in rent assistance is devastating.

This band-aid budget betrays renters, women, students, and anyone struggling.

Labor’s budget surplus is your cost of living pain, your gap fee at the doctor, and your ten year wait for a public home.

Cost of housing is the biggest driver of household pain. I welcome efforts to boost housing supply and more skilled labour. But we needed more pressure on the states to act on zoning reforms and renters' rights such as stopping no-grounds evictions.

I’m about to ask the Premier for the 6th time in this chamber to make unlimited rent increases illegal.

The first time I asked was a year ago. If Labor had introduced a rent freeze then - renters could have saved $2,537.

Instead their rents have increased 10% in the last year.

So over 4 million renters get nothing. While the 1 million renters who do get Commonwealth Rent Assistance only get $9 a week extra. Mortgage holders get nothing. Nothing for the 200k waiting for a public home. But property investors get $175 billion.

Labor’s budget is a betrayal of renters, women, students and mortgage holders.

They’ve got plenty of cash for climate destruction, with almost $50 billion in fossil fuel subsidies. 🧵

NEW Illinois “Extraordinary increases in property tax assessments, leaving the homeowners panicking that they won't be able to afford to stay in their homes.”

There’s $1.9bn for Commonwealth Rent Assistance over 4 years. I can’t stress enough how useless that is. There are 5.5m adult renters, but only 1.1m get CRA and only 908k will get an increase of $9/week. Rents went up $56/week last year.

Housing is a human right. But the rent is TOO DAMN HIGH.

That's why I worked with Sen Warren and President Biden to take executive action and issue a Blueprint for a Renters Bill of Rights.

With record high migration levels and less homes being built, there’s nothing additional in the budget for housing. No new ideas, nothing for first home buyers and nothing for renters. Sadly, Labor’s housing crisis is set to get even worse.
