In 1887, Vincent had a vital time in Asnières near Paris, calling it a 'painting campaign.' Daily, he'd walk 3 miles from Montmartre, his Paris home, experimenting with styles and colours. This painting shows his loosely placed brushstrokes and vibrant colours beautifully.

Painful affair 💔 In 1882, Vincent met Sien Hoornik, his model and lover. Despite societal disapproval due to her past as a prostitute, her pregnancy and young daughter, Vincent cared for her and ‘had hopes of her finding her feet’ (1883).

Van Gogh's letters reveal he crafted this vibrant landscape to match his 'Starry Night' painting. In 1889, he wrote to Theo about the paintings. Can you see 'Starry Night' echoes here?

Influenced by modern art 👨‍🎨 For his ‘Self-Portrait with Pipe’ (1886) Vincent employed traditional colours and lighting. Noticeably, his exposure to modern art prompted a significant change, both in colour and painting style. This is evident in the second ‘Self-Portrait’ (1887).

👔 How did Vincent dress? With red hair, green eyes, and a hint of a scowl, he favored a blue workman’s smock. Sometimes a hat or his cherished pipe accompanied him. Although post-1850, black three-piece suits were common. Vincent chose his own style.

Van Gogh first experimented on the Seine, Paris, with the colourful rendering of light, in a loose brushstroke. Here he took decisive steps towards the brightly coloured paintings he later produced in Arles, southern France where he stayed the last two months of his life.

🌻👵🌻 Vincent aimed to blend Sunflowers with Woman Rocking the Cradle, his homage to maternal comfort. The triptych, combining 'yellow panels' with the portrait, symbolized his gratitude.

My dear Theo, 📝 On the evening of the day we spent together, which for me passed as if in a twinkling, [...] it nevertheless remains in our memory, and that remembrance is of a lasting nature.

🐓 Vincent's final months were dedicated to painting. This vineyard drawing showcases his signature wavy lines. With pencil, oil paint, and watercolour, he created varying shades of blue. Faded red roofs and strategic white space complete the scene.

🍂 Inspired by his recent readings on colour theories, Vincent started adding in more colour in his paintings and departed from his usual ‘muddy’ tones. Do the orange and blue hues stand out to you in this painting, ‘Avenue of Poplars in Autumn’, 1884?

Paint everywhere 🎨 Paul Signac told Van Gogh’s biographer Gustave Coquiot: ‘He stuck right by me, shouting, gesticulating, and brandishing his large size-30 canvas, so that he spread wet paint onto himself and the passers-by’.

Antwerp art academy 🏫 Vincent was the only student in his class allowed to pay extra attention to the background shading, because he was making such good progress. What do you think of this heavily shaded area?

✍️ ‘I’ll tell you that we’re having some superb autumn days, and that I’m taking advantage of them. I have a few studies, among others a mulberry tree, all yellow on stony ground standing out against the blue of the sky’. Written to Theo (1889).

In July 1889, during a severe psychosis, Van Gogh painted this unique self-portrait. His lifeless, sombre expression, depicted in brown-green hues, reflects his mental state. His diffident glance mirrors the demeanour of those battling depression or psychosis.

Colours hint the season in this painting. 🍂 Vincent drew inspiration from Japanese art, applying their compositional techniques like high viewpoint, strong outlines and notable cut-offs at the edges of the canvas.
