Apparently this is justified cuz it guarantees tenure/funding etc. Well that is the f-in point. We r so addicted to brand names as illusions of quality/impact that we're willing to cut off our own legs, unable to spend on what really can make a difference to science & scientists.

the bio dept at UCSD is *cutting* pay for incoming phd students. this fall there will be a $16K difference in pay between first years and third years. when i say don’t come here for grad school i mean it.

it's absolutely wild to me that people don't understand that scientific publishing is essentially a scheme to defraud taxpayers by selling access to research that was taxpayer-funded in the first place.

paying journals to publish your work is a misuse of federal funds imho

1.5 million papers last year in PubMed * 12k a pop = $18b -- you think that economics makes sense?

Want to change the system? Post preprints and only post preprints - don't submit to journals, don't subscribe to journals, don't read journals - only hire and fund people based on their preprints.

cost WHO in America? How much of that $700 million would’ve gone to you?
