Fly safely little bat! Next stop could well be Netherlands or Belgium. Another tag deployed on a female Nathusius' pipistrelle, tracking migration from England to breeding grounds in continental Europe. Norfolk & Norwich Bat Group Bat Conservation Trust University of Sussex BatLife Europe

Fun with Nathusius' pipistrelles last night. Tagged 12 at Minsmere (two of them flew to Lowestoft) with Norfolk BG. Hope the bats will dodge the wind turbines and soon be detected on stations in Netherlands, Belgium or Germany!

New overview shows conservation interventions can and do work. 🥳Hopefully, +ve news will encourage investment to reverse the crisis.
BUT urgent action needed on woeful lack of funding/research in Global South where there is most to lose! bbc.co.uk/news/science-e…

Prevent Pandemics: Protect where bats eat & roost, protect people at risk. nature.com/articles/s4146…

In Nature Communications, primary prevention should be a priority to minimize future pandemic risk. Healthy environments & animals = healthy humans. Ecological Countermeasures can do this.

If you find a bat on the ground or exposed area during the day it may need help. What to do in 3 steps:
1/3. Put the bat in a box, using gloves or tea towel (advice here: bats.org.uk/advice/help-iv…)
2/3. Call the National Bat Helpline on 0345 1300 228 (UK only)

Flying in the day is fairly common in hungry bats at the end of hibernation. Hopefully there was lots of food about for it!

The yew at Muckross is one of the best examples of its kind in Ireland and is said to be as old as the abbey itself. One theory is that the courtyard and cloisters may even have built around the already mature yew which would make the tree over 600 years old.

Well here's an interesting find! Samples sent to us Ecotype Genetics turned out to be a rare Bechstein's bat. In a BUILDING. Bang in the middle of Bechstein's territory, but this species usually lives in trees. Just shows what you can discover from a pile of poo! Bat Conservation Trust 🦇

I was taught that scientists should be dispassionate about their study animals. But come on....Greater horseshoe bats are just SO floofy!🦇 ❤️🦇

Another day monitoring bats deep in the Bath Stone Mines. I am always amazed they find tiny crevices to cling to in the complete darkness. 🦇🦇

What can you do this weekend to turn your garden into a bat haven?
🌺 Plant night-scented flowers
💧Build a pond
🌿Let your garden go a little wild
🦇 Put up a bat box
🌳🌳Create linear features i.e hedgerows/treelines
💡 Reduce or remove artificial lighting
🐈 Keep cats indoors…
