This American White Pelican, Manhattan's first documented record of the species, continued flying and floating around Upper New York Bay today. We took this photo from the Staten Island Ferry.

Making art of owls is nothing new. In The Hidden Life of Owls, Leigh Calvez writes: “In Europe, hunter-gatherer people of the stone Age carved a Long-eared Owl in the Chauvet Cave, home of the second-oldest cave paintings in France at about 32,400 years old.” Manhattan Bird Alert
