Let’s set the facts straight: The population increase on NYC’s Rikers Island that is delaying its closure is a direct result of policies supported by Mayor Eric Adams’ administration, especially bail reform rollbacks that keep more people in jail without a benefit to our safety.

We are devastated to learn of the death of NYCDS and Brooklyn Defenders client, William Johnstone, at Rikers.

His death, marking the 6th in NYC jail custody this year, & the 25th since the beginning 2022, is both deeply saddening and outrageous.
