I hear there's a debate about a certain superpower's government-subsidized overcapacity that far outstrips domestic demand and that is flooding global markets and stoking conflict.

Glad the issue is finally on the table.

As Antonio Andreoni and Fiona Tregenna showed when analyzing a supposed inverted U-curve between industrialization and per capita income (PInc), our results also show that there is no such curve when analyzing industrial productivity and wage growth and (PInc) (including for MIC).

Kicking off our 2nd Future Leaders Programme on Industrial Policy for Economic Development in a time of Ecological Crisis.

It’s one of the biggest problems of our time, but luckily we have an amazing group to grapple with it!

Happy birthday to Albert Hirschman, who would be 109 today.

Hirschman—anti-fascist, resistance hero, later a development economist—may be the most interesting person to ever take up the profession.

🧵 and blog post on his remarkable life and work.

Attitudes have become so extreme that anyone who even *attempts* to tackle hard, important questions are scorned as unscientific, while scorners dedicate their lives to precisely proving points everyone already knows. Anything less than definite & airtight is not publishable…

'China is producing too much'.
Does Janet Yellen know any economic history? Did not India say the same thing to England? Did not England say the same thing to the US?

The interesting part is the extremism of Yellen's view. First, you love cheap goods, ignore everything else & believe whoever thinks differently is a fool
Then, you change 180 degrees, decide cheap goods create unemployment & want to create trade blocs.
