#TesticularCancer comes with an excellent chance of cure for the majority of patients. How can the global urological community now look to ensure we also think about life AFTER surgery and maximise fertility outcomes? Our paper available to read here:

But what are the BARRIERS? Our study suggests:
👉 Lack of easy access to semen cryopreservation
👉 Perception from urologists that semen analysis and hormomal assessment are not necessary pre-op

If we forgo basic functional assessment of the testes and expedite orchidectomy, how do we know which patients may have benefited from other fertility preservation options (e.g. onco-microTESE) until it’s potentially too late?

When we performed a global survey of 393 urologists:
❗Only 57% routinely offer semen cryopreservation
❗Only 36% perform pre-op semen analysis
❗️Only 22% perform pre-op hormonal function
👉 53% perform expedited orchidectomy within 1 week

Whilst we hope as urologists to improve outcomes by performing orchidectomy in an expedited fashion, our systematic review published in European Urology showed that there is no evidence to support an oncological benefit for this

We know from previous work that a high proportion of patients with #TesticularCancer have impaired baseline semen parameters – up to 24% are azoospermic and 50% oligozoospermic BJU International

Premise for our work now published open access in BJUI Compass is that male fertility is too often an afterthought when managing men with a new diagnosis of #TesticularCancer
