The black and white pic is looking north from the junction of Donegall Place and Castle Place, this way. The glorious building in the middle was the old Ulster Club, the demolition of which was one of many architectural crimes. Look at the modern tat all round that replaced it

It might be that the sudden collapse of Sir Jeffrey Donaldson somehow kickstarts this realignment, but still there are huge obstacles to it. My column first printed yesterday in the weekend print edition newsletter.co.uk/news/opinion/c…

It's extraordinary that Dublin Airport still has this post up three days after it emerged that we had seen little of William and Kate because she is battling cancer but had not divulged that until she had to do so to quell relentless and cruel speculation

Wow. Thanks for flagging this clip which is revealing, but not in the way you think. The RTÉ News intro to the report accepts a vague SF 'sorry' as an apology for killing informers, which it clearly isn't. Rev Hamilton explained the distinction to anyone who can't see the obvious

A long read from economist Graham Gudgin: 'the Republic is such a big tax-haven as to be a scam economy'. I wonder what Sinn Féin think: they have redistributive financial policies yet are reassuring businesses they support low Irish corporation tax

I was 10 when Capers opened on Great Victoria St. It was packed every night, and I remember the buzz. Belfast at night was coming alive again. Sad to see it close, but what an innings!

Ben Lowry Saint Brigid's Day, 1st of February marks the beginning of spring, and for Christians, it is the feast day of Saint Brigid, Ireland's patroness saint. Its traditional date is 1 February, about halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox.

Ben Lowry My father a native Irish speaker from RnaF called the short lengthening of the day in January ‘Coiscéim Coilleach’ (Cock’s Footstep)

The longer lengthening in February & March was called ‘Beiriú na Smeóilín’ the length of time it would take to boil a blackbird!
