remembering how inspired I was in the late 1970s by Anaïs Nin’s intimate, theatrical diaries—tonight I’m reading Marguerite Duras, a virtuoso of the “stage whisper”—as if speaking to no one, but audible in the rafters

What better way to spend the morning of your 55th birthday than introducing academic colleagues to the glittery excremental poetics of Wayne Koestenbaum

From Gaza's last maternity and neonatal hospital, in Rafah: 'At the moment there are 45 babies between the neonatal intensive care unit and the special care intensive care unit. Without a doubt, if the Israeli army occupies this space, every single one of those babies will die.'

An anecdote passed down to me: once when the New School was occupied by students, members of the grad faculty met in a hotel room to decide what to do. When the police were mentioned, Hannah Arendt said, *in German*—'you never call the police.'

RIP Paul Auster. His anthology of French poetry was hugely important to me in college-- it's one of the reasons I decided to translate a book of poems for my senior thesis. It's one of those rare books that changed my life. I will be always be grateful.
