โ€œIn the absence of God, we get to make up any rules we want.โ€

Humans who donโ€™t believe in God do terrible things. Humans who do believe in God do terrible things.

I donโ€™t think whether or not you believe in God is the problem. Humans are the problem.

I joined Isa Soares at CNN Isa Soares to discuss my family's situation in Rafah & college protests, warning against the squandering of a historic opportunity to drum up support for Palestinian rights & urging students to pursue pragmatic goals & to engage Jewish & Israeli audiences.

Watching Hotel Rwanda growing up spoiled me: I always assumed 'genocide' involved ghouls with machetes hacking people to pieces. The internets have reliably informed me that my desire to nail that Korean grad student who lives down the hall is the REAL genocide.

The NYPD's reputation is odd to me because everyone talks about them like a really hardass, violent police department even though they have the fewest police shootings per capita of any major US city and are one of the 5-10 most professional police forces in the country

This is a case where the RNC account clearly counts on people not to watch the clip. She isn't struggling at all, her answer is perfectly fine, and 'I don't consume any meat' is just a jokey aside. And yet I see people who should know better running with 'Oh lol she's terrible'

Insanity. Why UCLA didn't call the cops here, I don't know. If you don't have supervision of angry crowds, this is a likely result. Lord of the Flies is not a good governance plan.

'So far, so bad. And yet a summary dismissal of Casanova as 'an abuser,' as in the 2018 Huffington Post article, is as simplistic as the 'worldโ€™s greatest lover' mythology.' Pair this from the archives with Cathy Young ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ's long-read Byron piece just out: thebulwark.com/revisiting-casโ€ฆ

The amazing things one learns from the โ€œPalestine Solidarity Campaignโ€!

Today in Leeds, this sage revealed that โ€œZionismโ€™s bloody handsโ€ are behind so much that is bad. Even Atlanta cops enforcing โ€œwhite supremacyโ€ and trouble in the Philippines.

Hurrah, now you know!

If you enjoyed this essay (& I hope you did), I also strongly recommend the 4-part Byron series on the Tom Holland & Dominic Sandbrook podcast, The Rest Is History, starting here youtube.com/watch?v=8C-Zwsโ€ฆ
(the podcast gets a shout-out in my piece)

Agree. This stuff may hurt their rep a bit but they have a lot of rep stored up. We humans (especially on Twitter) have a tendency to think WHATEVER IS HAPPENING NOW IS GOING TO HAVE WIDE-RANGING EFFECTS ON SOCIETY FOREVER!!! But mostly, things don't change that fast.

Three strategic thoughts:

1) Stop using woke buzzwords like 'colonialism' which mostly get eyerolls.
2) Portray yourselves as concerned Americans, concerned about overseas people. Project your American patriotism, not allegiance with foreign powers.
3) Stop wearing masks

A wonderful tribute by Malcolm Guite to Byron's Hebrew Melodies.

I find it so painful that some of them were written on Byron's honeymoon, with his new wife helping transcribe them - perhaps their happiest time together - & yet already such misery...

Cathy Young ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ (For people who care so much about 'cultural appropriation', they've really taken it to a new level; and can you just imagine how these same people would react upon seeing someone that sloppy about wearing a krama?)

Cathy Young ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ One side effect of using keffiyehs as protest symbols has been that they're now almost all made in China, which pretty much entirely destroyed the market for authentic Palestinian weavers. Oops. And almost none of them are even wearing them correctly to boot.
