New article by Lauren Sukin and @Alanoszka challenges convention wisdom regarding alliance reassurance. Key finding - respondents in Central–Eastern European countries prefer demonstrations of credibility that minimize the risks of crisis escalation. academic.oup.com/isq/article/68…

Dear participants, you're very welcome to our 'team IRSEM' panel devoted to agency and great power competition from a 'Global South' perspective!

I'll present my ongoing research on Russia's anti(neo)colonial strategic narrative and foreign policy in West Africa.

We started early this year with a pre-conf workshop on 'Parties and Cabinets in Foreign Policy'. Jointly organized by Ben Martill, Sibel Oktay and me, we're over the moon for all the brilliant colleagues who are here to think about existing research & its future. ISA

In San Francisco with a nice and packed program at : an ongoing and outstanding workshop on party/cabinet politics and foreign policy, two promising roundtables on populism in IR, and a topical panel on European responses to the Rus-Ukr war.
Let me know if you’re around!

It's that time of the year again! I was delighted to resume and have the first sessions of my course on EU Member states' national foreign policies at the College of Europe. Always great to be back at the College and meet the new students

I was happy to provide some brief thoughts on 30 years of Czech foreign policy for Institute of International Relations Prague's Mezinárodní politika

A very welcome exercise for me as I am working on my book (in French) on Central European foreign policies since 2004

Thanks Jan Daniel for the invitation

As showcased in the Czech and French Presidents' joint press conference today in Prague, France and Central Europe's strategic outlooks on European security seem to be increasingly converging. I try to explain how and why here 👇

People throwing flowers at the hearse carrying Navalny’s body. After so many waves of repression it’s amazing that so many of his supporters have turned out.

Opposer le rapport de force à la diplomatie c'est vraiment ne rien comprendre au premier et méconnaître la seconde. Comme disait Bismarck, la diplomatie sans les armes, c'est la musique sans les instruments

The fact that Macron’s comments about possibly sending Western troops to Ukraine sparked such widespread opposition shows why bringing Ukraine into NATO probably wouldn’t work. If the U.S. and Europe are unwilling to fight for Ukraine today, why would they do it in the future?

And one last thing: Navalny wasn't murdered as an affront to the West. That doesn't mean the West shouldn't be offended. But Navalny's death was, first and foremost, an attack on Russia. By all means, be angry. I certainly am. But be angry on their behalf, not our own.
