Usually people don’t engage because of systemic barriers to engagement.

Dr Dean We've been talking about this for as long as I can remember. And I'm almost as old as the NHS. The challenge isn't patients not engaging, it's designing effective processes.

Dr Dean My GP sends a text with a proforma attached instead of doing health checks, and usually in the month before Qof. I don’t engage. TBH I would get Dominoes to offer a BP check with every pizza. Convenient, no white coat problems and is followed by a delicious treat

I spoke to a locum GP this weekend who is likely to give up her licence to practice as she has not had enough patient contact this year to prove competence (which is an annual requirement in England).

This is due to a shortage of work, because no one can afford to employ GPs.

Tom Marshall Dr Dean Article says health checks are not helpful because “ primary care physicians already identify and intervene when they suspect a patient to be at high risk of developing disease when they see them for other reasons.”
Is this still true given the problem with access to GPs?

If we are to create a national wellbeing service we need to encourage patients to attend for regular health and chronic disease checks.

How would you motivate patients who do not engage with health services?

Our government has trust issues.

Give money to GPs to buy staff? No.
Give money to sick people to care for themselves? No.

GPs expressed worries that Dr Parker’s position on the panel would deter the GPC from publicly criticising the decision, or discourage GPs in his LMC area to raise concerns about it. buff.ly/3UoTxA6
