Very excited to share a huge project that's been a long time in the making. Interested in squamate macroevolution? Curious about how snakes fit into the broader ecological context of squamates? Looking for a new squamate phylogeny? Check out our new work: doi.org/10.1126/scienc…

Big news. Prof Shine etal have scientifically proven the 100s of millions of $ (just in 1 region) saved by farmers choosing to keep mice-eating snakes around rather than killing the helpful snakes, contrasted w/ the very small risk of snakebite for farmers tinyurl.com/yp87xksb

I don’t always feel that we deserve to share a landscape with these ancient and graceful icons of this continent, but seeing that we do for now, let’s treasure and make room for them a bit more. It’s really not that difficult. 🫲🏼🐍🐍🐍🐍🫱🏼

New bird for the block! Bit of a surprise to have a Baillon’s crake fly into my shed and join me on the couch last night. After a quick health check I relocated it into the reeds around my frog pond.

I’ve been spruiking snake conservation for 25 years. Would be so much easier to convince people to stop harming them if they looked like this.

Eureka!!! We built a bunch of rock piles scattered around our block in the hope that they would provide habitat for any of the local reptiles.
This one is getting a vote of confidence from one of the sand monitors (Varanus gouldii) that live here🦎

We’ve recorded 13 reptile species on a Cumberland Plains Woodland environmental offset reserve this past week. Weasel Skink was a nice find.
