FCDO Deputy Chief Economist job - two weeks left to apply.

A really important and interesting role with a focus on the development side of FCDO's work.

Solar panels AND a petrol generator in this new World Food Programme agriculture project - likely reflecting needs of many rural communities.

Let's hope Paris-alignment of finance doesn't overlook the reality of energy needs for food security

Would Labour continue using the foreign aid budget to pay for domestic asylum and refugee costs?

'I’m told that Labour plans to stop using the aid budget in this way, but doesn’t yet know whether to do so immediately or over time.'

Useful new stats on key shipping and trade crossings

Chatham House colleagues should be proud to see this too - responding to Laura Wellesley and Rob Bailey work on potential trade choke points

This should also mean the costs of hosting 'irregular arrivals' is no longer eligible as aid (Official Development Assistance).

OECD stats out for 2023. Some positives - a real overall increase; driven by 🇯🇵 + 🇺🇸.

Still, refugee spend at home still dominant - more spent on that ($31bn) than provided bilaterally to Sub-Saharan Africa ($28bn), or to LDCs ($30bn).

Here's an excellent explainer from Ian Mitchell, who finds that if you strip out refugee spend just 0.42 per cent of GNI was spent on aid

A characteristically thorough and very useful thread from Ian. Lots of important questions to be asked about where the UK is spending its development budget (and particularly about how much is being spent domestically).

The UK's new aid statistics are out, and this is just crazy...

Ian Mitchell (@CGDev): 'The government is now spending over 50% of the £9.9bn bilateral aid budget within the UK... [up] from a low of 6% in 2013.”
