Our main explanation is that the EU's focus on integration via financial liberalisation (before & after the crisis) has induced the rapid financialisation of its non-financial corporations, which is pushing them to undermine unions as a means of reducing labour costs

Building on the brilliant work of John Peters & Christopher Kollmeyer, we show that dividends, stock market volatility, & rising corporate debt ratios have exacerbated the reduction in union density across the EU over the last 21 years

While these have been crucial indeed, what has not gained enough attention for the case of the EU is the potential role of shareholder primacy and rising corporate debt ratios ↘️

Union density rates have been declining consistently across most EU countries over the period of deeper economic integration since 1999. Most explanations of this trend have focused on the roles of labour market liberalisation, deindustrialisation, and trade openness
