Do you live in a historic building with a foot scraper?

If so, maybe it came from the Falkirk General Catalogue [1930]. No. 68 with brushes looks like it could clean the dirtiest of boots...

If you have dry or wet rot, what can you do?

First, ID the source of the issue and fix it (likely water somewhere it shouldn't be). Then remove and repair defective timbers. You also need to raise the ambient temperature and check plasterwork too!

When making timber repairs, there are three things to think about in order to minimise historic timber loss...

1. What has gone wrong?
2. What do I need to replace?
3. What should I replace it with?

If you suspect dry rot in your property, how can you tell? 🤔

- an earthy smell
- fruiting bodies on the surface
- cupping of joinery (e.g. curved skirting boards)
- insect holes
- floor deflection (movement)
- surface mould
- obvious issues (poor drainage, pools of groundwater)

If you have a traditional slate roof and can see into your attic space from the inside, look at the nails.

Droplets of water on the nails holding your slates in place means condensation in your loft space. Time to do something about the airflow!

If you have wood-boring insects in your timber, don't panic! There are ways to remove them.

But you should also think why they are there in the first place. What has attracted them to your property?

Check for damp and humidity and get it sorted, or they may return...
