in 1945, Dachau Concentration Camp was liberated by US Army soldiers.

Dachau was the first concentration camp to be constructed by the Nazis and one of the last to be liberated. Over 180,000 people had been imprisoned in the camp by the time it was liberated.

in 1915, 235 leading members of Istanbul’s Armenian community were arrested. Many of them were then tortured and publicly executed.

By the end of the First World War, an estimated 1.5 million Armenians had been murdered as a result of Ottoman policies.

in 1945 Soviet troops liberated Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. They found 3,000 unguarded, weak and ill prisoners. These were the people who were too unwell to join the forced death march, which set off from Sachsenhausen the day before liberation.

in 1943 the Warsaw Ghetto uprising began.

When the Nazis entered Ghetto to liquidate it, approximately 750 fighters fought the well-armed and trained soldiers. The revolt lasted until 16 May 1943, when the fighters were finally defeated.

in 1975, Khmer Rouge forces entered Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia and defeated the ruling Lon Nol Army.

The taking of Phnom Penh marked the beginning of the genocide in Cambodia, during which it is estimated that well over two million people were murdered.

in 1994, the massacre at Nyarubuye Catholic Church during the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda began.

On 15 and 16 April 1994, 5,000-10,000 people were murdered at the Church.

Approximately 1 million people in total were murdered during the genocide.

in 1945, British troops liberated Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp.

In the days that followed, more than 13,000 people died as a result of their treatment at the camp.

More than 70,000 prisoners, the majority of whom were Jewish, were murdered at Bergen-Belsen.

Between 1937 and 1945 approximately 250,000 people were imprisoned at Buchenwald, over 56,000 of whom were killed.
