China, India, and many of the European countries experienced the highest growth of economic costs on the older population associated with air pollution from 2000 to 2016. Population aging is exaggerating the impacts of air pollution.

Macroeconomic damage of COVID19 is devastating to many countries. This work clearly shows that acting fast and strict will help to avoid an enormous loss to the global economy.

Our preprint study reveals that air pollution hit the older population hardest doi.org/10.1101/2020.0…. We provide high-resolution estimates of the global economic cost of deaths attributable to ambient air pollution in 195 countries from 2000 to 2016.

COVID-19 hinders the emission temporarily, while rebound effects are showing up.
