With increasing levels of cumulative N, net diversity effect became stronger, driven by a shift from complementarity to selection effects.

Overall N-enrichment decreased complementarity and increased selection effect, leading to no overall effect of N-enrichment on net diversity effects. However, things became more complicated and non-linear when looking at cumulative N-enrichment over time.

Miao He assembled a massive biomass data set from 15 experiments that manipulate species richness and nitrogen enrichment and calculated net, complementarity and selection effects of diversity to test how cumulative nitrogen enrichment over time affected overiyelding.

Eskelinen et al. show that nutrient addition decreases grassland seed bank diversity, increases seed bank similarity to aboveground communities, and interacts with aboveground herbivory to affect their abundance.
