Brilliant article by Valerie Hopkins about Belarus 3 years after the mass pro democracy protests in 2020.

And the best illustration to what is happening there in one picture.

In Belarus, I spoke to people who are still being punished for participating in the pro-democracy movement in 2023. People are being jailed for commenting on memes, disparaging Lukashenko, and even just being seen in photos from the 2020 protests.

< 2 weeks since Lukashenko mediated a deal to end the 36hr Wagner mutiny & bring mercenaries to Belarus, the message was effectively “nothing to see here!” —at least not now. Nanna Heitmann⁩ and I visited one of the empty bases available to Wagner: nytimes.com/2023/07/07/wor…

We’re in the Moscow courtroom where Evan Gershkovich is appealing the extension of his pre-trial detention. It’s 12 weeks since the Wall Street Journal reporter was arrested in Russia and charged with espionage. He & his employer vehemently deny the charge.

“Divorce can even increase women’s value.”

I went to Ouadane in the Mauritanian desert for a divorce party with @LauraBoushnak and learned so much from the women I met there

Last month, we were travelling with Evan Gershkovich on holiday and he was lugging around the enormous “Life & Fate” by Vasily Grossman, reading long passages out loud.

I cannot tell you HOW much joy it brings to know he is reunited with the book.

First news of Evan from jail:

Smart of @wsj to pull together this video on Evan Gershkovich — humanizes, testifies to his ethics and work, and highlights fact that he's essentially a Kremlin hostage

This piece by Joshua Yaffa captures so much of the horror and disbelief I feel about the arrest of our friend Evan: newyorker.com/news/daily-com…

“The library in Lefortovo is great.” I know that if he is allowed, Evan will make use of it. For weeks, he has been reading Vasily Grossman’s Life and Fate. At regular intervals he spoke passionately about the book as the best he’s ever read. See instructions on how to write him

The Kremlin knew that arresting Evan would cause a global outcry.

“Good — they’ll know that we’re not kidding,” said Dmitri Muratov, the Russian Nobel laureate. “That’s the signal being sent by the Russian government.” nytimes.com/2023/03/31/wor…
