Penduline Tit Remiz pendulinus male nest building in a roadside Elm beside a reedbed at Ilmitz, Austria something I have wanted to see for a long time, what a stunning nest, 'needle felted' together.

Longhorn beetles Lesser Capricorn Cerambyx scopoli & Saperda perforata active in the warm sunshine at Lobau, Vienna, Austria on 27 April 2024. The Saperda probably spends it days high in trees so usually difficult to find, this one had a deformed wing so could not fly.

Great to hear and occasionally see so many Nightingales Luscinia megarhynchos around Vienna and the Neusiedler See in Austria last week - managed to get some video of this one at Holle near Ilmitz.

The outskirts of Vienna, Austria are a stronghold for the critically endangered European Ground Squirrel Spermophilus citellus. Local people feed them sunflower seeds at this site so they are hand tame.

Andrena ventralis. Added to the British list from a site in Hampshire last year. One of six British Andrena's that gather pollen entirely from Salix. The combination of red underside to gaster and white tergite flecks makes it pretty easy to identify. Thanks John Walters

I hoped to see Penduline Tit Remiz pendulinus in Austria this week & luckily found a stunning male building a nest in a roadside Elm at Seebad, near Ilmitz. An amazing nest woven from grasses, reed and Reed Mace seeds which is 'needle felted' together with its fine pointed bill.
