NEW: The US soldier detained in Russia is Staff Sgt. Gordon C. Black, a 15-year US Army vet, per an Army statement.

Black left for a change of station for Fort Cavazos, Texas, but flew through Russia for personal reasons.

He did not ask for official clearance.
