Harriet Presser left us twelve years ago today. After a lifetime of caring about workers, I think it's fitting that she departed this earth on May 1. She was a brilliant colleague and a great friend. I can still hear her laugh. May she Rest in Worker Power.

“The overarching question is not how to mitigate poverty among childless adults in the U.S., but how to create the political will to do so,” @janetgornick, David Brady (@davebrady72.bsky.social), Ive Marx, and @zparolin. brookings.edu/articles/pover…

The US is exceptional in providing almost no safety net to (presumed) work-able, childless adults - 106 million people! No wonder that poverty among this demographic is a serious albeit largely unrecognized problem. From a new paper with Janet Gornick David Brady (@davebrady72.bsky.social) Zach Parolin (1/n)

PS I hope it's obvious I'm not anti-tax. IMHO, the amount of revenue raised via US taxes should be increased. My point: many aspects of US system, especially FICA, are regressive, and should be made more progressive. To start, raise FICA cap; $168,600 is too low in today's world.
