My favorite things about Madame Restell, an abortionist in early 1800's New York, her husband had his own store front that sold the same abortion pills and was never bothered by law, maintaining her cash flow while she was in jail, and she disowned her daughter for marrying a cop

“But in much of America, the land of the free, you can be forced to give birth.” Jennifer Wright’s book Madame Restell was a masterpiece. It’s so important for Americans to learn that abortion has ALWAYS existed in America, despite what forced birth advocates claim. 👏

I heard Jennifer Wright on the with Chris Hayes and immediately bought the book. It’s a pretty shocking story that I can’t believe (read: I can believe it because this is America) I haven’t heard before. Masterfully written and unfortunately relevant.

🧵It's kinda wild how there's so many parallels between the discourse during Madame Restell's time (a figure you've probably never heard of) and current debates over abortion. Author Jennifer Wright joins the latest w/Chris Hayes to discuss: link.chtbl.com/H1_0J49V?sid=tw

Loving this book and looking forward to talking to Jennifer Wright about Madame Restell and how Anthony Comstock was a tortured chronic masturbator 😑

A great review of a book about a reproductive rights pioneer you might never have heard of— a heroine of mine in fiction —now here she is in fact (and supplying abortion pills in 1800s ) Jennifer Wright
