Turning to natural history this week, we have 'A History of the Spiders of Great Britain and Ireland' by John Blackwall (1862). Blackwall was a naturalist with a particular interest in spiders. During the 1860s, he exchanged several letters with Darwin on variation in spiders.

William Smellie's 'A sett of anatomical tables' (1754) is a collection of anatomical drawings depicting pregnancy and childbirth. Only 100 copies of this first edition were produced. Ground breaking in its detail and accuracy, Smellie is known as the father of British midwifery.

Our latest acquisition is a doctor's bag belonging to Liverpool GP Dr Maurice Frederick Levy (1925-2017). Dr Levy established his practice on Edge Lane in 1956, and for the next 30 years was a dedicated and popular GP. We're grateful to his son Dr Max Levy for the kind donation.

We are lucky to possess two copies of Edward Jenner's 1798 work in which he described the protective effect of cowpox against smallpox. Jenner’s vaccination soon became the major means of preventing smallpox around the world, and the disease was eventually eradicated in 1980.

This week's treasure is an example of an anatomical flap book ('pop-up' book), you lift the flaps of paper to reveal the layers below. Physician Gustave Joseph Witkowski (1844-1923) produced a whole atlas of the human body this way. These illustrations are from Part IV : The Eye.

Each week we're going to be showcasing a treasure from our collections. We thought we'd start with Italian physician and anatomist Paolo Mascagni's great work 'Anatomia universa' published in 1823, an elephant-sized folio of hand-coloured anatomical plates.
