We’re delighted to announce that main construction is underway on our brand new Surgical Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Same Day Emergency Care Centre facility 🏥 The brand-new state of the art Surgical NICU will be the first of its kind in the country...

It’s also abt getting the basics right. Innovation is more difficult if staff can’t do simple things like log onto their computers. Alder Hey has a big focus on this, but like most in NHS, they need capital investment in these basics so they can make transformational change 12/12

The number one issue, Louise Shepherd said, is the risk of children falling between the cracks and Alder Hey is keen to collaborate with a wide variety of partners to create an ecosystem to wrap around children. 11/12

Speaking to Louise Shepherd and Dame Jo Williams, we heard about the need to prioritise children and young people’s health nationally and the need for a joined-up approach with partners beyond health 10/12

These innovations are in the best interests of children and families, and wider healthcare system but they can mean Alder Hey bears a greater financial burden, which is not recognised in the way funding is structured. This is an issue for the Confed’s work on payment systems 9/12

Cheshire and Merseyside ICS has established a board based Children and Young People Committee to progress its commitment to collaborative, system-wide, action to improve children’s health and wellbeing. 8/12

These examples, and more besides, demonstrate Alder Hey’s focus on putting children and young people at the centre of service design and commitment to work with partners to achieve the right outcomes 7/12

There’s building work ongoing on a new neonatal surgery unit – in partnership with Liverpool Women's – which means mums will be able to come too when their baby needs surgery and have a consistent team caring for them 6/12

This allows young people to be at home and even go back to school while being constantly monitored, with nurses able to go into schools or visit after school so families don’t need to miss school and children don’t miss out on education 5/12

Alder Hey aspires to be a hospital without borders and Little Hearts at Home is one example of this. Another is its virtual wards using tech adapted for young children, which is easily set up using QR codes 4/12

Data is processed automatically to enable clinicians at the hospital to make rapid decisions. The service allows patients to be discharged earlier and spend more of their childhood at home. It is being adopted both across the NHS and internationally 3/12

We heard about the Little Hearts at Home service which enables children with congenital heart issues to receive proactive specialist care at home, with monitoring tools allowing children to have their condition monitored remotely 2/12
