Hard as it is to believe when reading the news, the homicide rate in London has *halved* over the past 20 years.

In the past two decades London has gained 1.7 million extra residents and yet the annual number of homicides has gone down from 212 in 2003 to 110 in 2023.

Mental health has become a political talking point recently.

Lots of the rhetoric has been stigmatising, harmful and inaccurate.

It’s very distressing, and for some of us triggering, to hear mental health problems used as a political football.

Aside from everything else... are there enough spare rooms in hospitals for this? If there aren't is there going to be funding to build them? How will the availability of care be guaranteed to the trans community?

When you give people vouchers instead of cash, you are making the assumption that you know better than the people recieving these things about what they want and need.

You are also assuming that you have the right to make decisions for them.

Both assumptions are wrong.

A surprising and brutal -but totally reasonable - article here.

“The dismal science” has been even more dismal and even less scientific than usual over recent years.

Community power gives people a genuine stake in the clean energy transition.

But its growth has been stunted: with community-owned energy falling from an 81% growth rate in 2016–2017, to just 2.4% in 2020–2021.

Privatisation has transformed our railways into engines of extraction for investors and overseas state enterprises. Public ownership can deliver a future of rail prosperity.

New paper from us and our friends at NEF, Co-operatives UK and Centre for Thriving Places! Some great stuff happening in our combined authorities to build inclusive economies. With more devolution and less growth for growth’s sake deal making from Westminster these areas could really fly!

As David Buck and Luca Tiratelli argued last week ICSs need to be given time to find their feet.. But, we need better devo arrangements. No more growth growth’s sake deals. We need broader targets for CAs to address the wider determinants. STAT!!

ONS have published alcohol-specific deaths data for 2022 for England & Wales today, so we now have data for the whole of the UK. The picture is pretty grim, with deaths surpassing 10,000 for the first time on record - up 32.8% since 2019.

Today marks the start of Black Maternal Health Awareness Week.

Black mothers remain 4x more likely to die in pregnancy, childbirth & postpartum.

This week is a reminder that action is needed to address the inequalities Black women face at every stage of the birthing journey.
