Matthew A. Kraft Why are distractions take up SO much more time than we think?

Well, it's partly because of the 'aftermath' of distractions.

Students will often focus on something else and then it can take time for them to get back to the point they were at in their thinking.

Matthew A. Kraft That figure doesn't even include disruptions due to behaviour.

(which last week's DfE report suggests is more like a quarter of lesson time 😱)

Regardless, all this tends to be systematically under-estimated by leaders.

This is obvious Peps. Get in the bin.

Well... partly. I think the EXTENT of the cost is distractions is not quite that intuitive.

For example, a study from Matthew A. Kraft found that, in a typical US school, up to 20 days of learning time was lost per year to distractions.

Which is why high quality professional development is so vital.

BUT... the rate at which teachers get better also partly depends on the conditions within their school.

Teacher expertise is not a solo sport.

As promised, we just released a new CALDER Center paper on how ESSER funding INFLUENCED school system hiring in WA. In particular, we are estimating the number of school system employees got hired that wouldn't have in the absence of ESSER funds.

Teacher strikes are among the most controversial acts in the public education sector. We show that strikes are also consequential - for both politics and public education funding. ⬇️

This project was so fascinating and fun because we didn’t know what we would find. πŸ’«πŸ’―

Great work from Matthew A. Kraft and Melissa Arnold Lyon (Mimi) on the impact of teacher strikes on funding and education policy
'Strikes shape broader support for education funding, resulting in over $600 increases in district revenues and expenditures per pupil.'

🚨New paper in The JHR on the political economy of teacher strikes!

Matthew A. Kraft & I find that teacher strikes publicly signal the need for change in education. Strikes cause big increases in education ads in campaigns & in school spending.

Are districts 'growing their own' way?

Kick off your tomorrow morning at 9am w/ a great AERA Division L session on teacher recruitment!

I'll be presenting work w/ Matthew A. Kraft that describes the variation in GYO programs & classifies them based on their features

Super excited to see this out. Sarah Reckhow was an amazing collaborator. With the politics of education recently becoming such a dominant force in American politics, here’s a review that dives deeper into the longstanding debates and the new ones that are emerging. Check it out!
