“Don’t shit in your own moat” is a very plausible Geordie saying.

As early as the Middle Ages, the people of Newcastle used the moat of the Castle as their ‘midden’. By 1620 this dungheap is described as being '98 yards in length, 32 in breadth and 10 yards deep', becoming so heavy that it brought part of the Castle’s wall crashing down.

Sycamore loved our visit to Newcastle Castle today. We learned how to make pottage, how to play medieval instruments and how to be a knight. What a day! 🏰 🍲 🪈

The second of our 3 schools Kells Lane Primary School took a trip to Medieval Newcastle with a ye olde cookery lesson, medieval music session in the chapel and an awesome Knight School in the Great Hall at Newcastle Castle The National League Trust
