I was too young to remember the UK coverage of SA apartheid so this is really useful context for understanding our blind spots today.

Hivemind. I'm thinking of pledging to not do a talk, panel or other work for any organisation with a turnover of over £1,000,000 without a fee. Does that seem reasonable? Should it be lower? What is the largest size of organisation you'll work for before asking for a fee?

This seemed a bit fanciful at the time and now the first two have been cancelled and the council wants to build a children's prison on the Lea Bridge Rd site instead

It is worth noting that in its 30+ year history, Open City has only has white directors so this could be a fantastic opportunity for someone more representative of the communities the charity seeks to serve to take the leadership role.

Recruitment has opened for the new Open City CEO and you should absolutely apply. It's a hard and complicated role but the work is hugely important (and they've bumped the pay up too 😅) Be bold. Go for it!

We've all met architecture graduates up to their eyeballs in debt, paying two thirds of their income in rent while earning less than minimum wage who still identify as 'middle class'. Why do many architects think they are more privileged than they are? dezeen.com/2024/05/08/arc…

“in Britain there has never been a single recognition agreement between a private architecture practice and a trade union” - Phineas Harper

Wild stuff — whatever industry you’re in, join a union.

No thank you large architecture institute that pays its top ten staff well over £100k each, I won't do several days of work and travel for your awards jury, however prestigious it is, for free because you're 'a charity' — charities should be more ethical employers, not less. 😘

Architecture is lightyears behind other sectors at working with trade unions. In the UK no private sector architecture firm has signed a recognition agreement with a trade union ever. That has to change! I wrote about unionism in architecture for Dezeen.

For 3 decades, architects Feyferlik / Fritzer have been engaged in a gradual process of repair and creative upgrades at Mariazell Basilica. Their interventions are neither grand gestures nor frigid restorations, but a sophisticated hybrid of improvements. instagram.com/p/C6ss3SICA2F

It's time Brits had a proper Right to Repair. Thank you Design Council and others for organising this pop-up repair cafe in parliament.
