This slow worm (Anguis fragilis) surprised Tobias Plieninger and me in a beautiful revived wood-pasture in the Bramwald . 🌳🐂🌳🐂🌳

Many North African oases are degrading, like here in Nkoub. Drought & expansion of industrial agriculture based on borewells (partly driven by foreign investors) make crop cultivation impossible, lead to palm decay & threaten the ancient khettara system of water management.

Biocultural refugia shelter farm biodiversity & carry knowledge about producing food while stewarding biodiversity (dx.doi.org/10.5751/ES-062…). Here's one: Tizi n'Oucheg. Identifying development options is imperative as they are maintained by poverty (doi.org/10.1016/j.tree…).

Sacred sites offer protection to natural & cultural heritage. Very interesting initiative to run community nurseries for restoration around Moroccan Jewish cemeteries & in this case a sacred tomb. A big thank you to @atlashigh for receiving us in Akrich! highatlasfoundation.org/en/insights/cu…

Urban palm oasis in Tinghir/Morocco - The most complex system I have seen. It comprises 3 cultivation layers:
- Date palms
- Tree crops (pomegranate, fig, quince, mulberry etc)
- Annual crops (alfalfa, barley, wheat etc).
All based on ancient irrigation practices.
