Rather late to the game, I know, but reading and very much enjoying John Haffenden’s biography of William Empson. There’s even an MR James connection of sorts - MRJ was very close friends with AC Benson and AB Ramsay, successive Masters of Magdalene, Empson’s Cambridge college.

Greatly enjoying William Empson’s Milton’s God. Empson proposes that Satan, whom he greatly admires, is ‘a deeply conscientious republican’, ‘a rippingly grand aristocrat’, and ‘a Yorkshireman’.

Ok Twitter - something that’s long troubled me. What do you do with a possessive apostrophe after a title in inverted commas? Should I write <‘The Mezzotint’’s> (which must surely be technically correct) - or <‘The Mezzotint’s> - or even <‘The Mezzotint’s’>?

Um, university English professor here. I have to say, this is news to me, and probably to the students currently taking my course on George Orwell.

Hello Twitter - I need help. Letter from H.E. Luxmoore to M.R. James: ‘Do you know Delany Delaney (or words to that effect), a novel by the wife of an Irish station master?’ Anyone know what this is?

One footnote to the passing of the great JPR Williams. The muttonchop sideburn was a small but discernible presence in my childhood. Noddy Holder. Amos Brearley. Rhodes Boyson. Trevor Bolder.
