My niece (Year 10) is about to start a module at school on Jack the Ripper.
I’m lending her this.

Because 🙋‍♀️

And I’ve told her: if anyone tries to tell you that Jack’s victims were just ‘women of the night’ you can hit them with this book 📚

This is why service (and how well you do it) absolutely must always be considered an integral and important part of any promotion procedure.

Academia needs to stop rewarding free riding dudes.

ECHR ruling on Swiss women's case that their human rights were violated by climate inaction is huge. Pay attention UK Government...your failure to act is putting lives here in the UK at risk too - and it is morally and legally indefensible.

As UK academia prepares to shrink radically, it's now 44 universities with confirmed redundancy schemes. qmucu.org/qmul-transform…

The sector is on fire. Where are the policy interventions, where is the planning for a regeneration of the higher Ed sector? There aren’t any because this is the plan. The decay is the plan. That’s just not good enough.

Things that should be cut but probably won't in cost-saving measures for universities:
1. the REF
2. restructuring advice from management consultants
3. contract with Key Travel
4. clunky 'virtual learning environment' when you could just email a PDF

‘What we’re seeing isn’t some slow, careful rebalancing of the system... Instead, it’s just another messy, confused decline of something Britain was genuinely once good at, which contributed billions to the economy while projecting soft power abroad.’ theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

And universities are massive employers. If they go pop, so will the local economies of towns and cities near you. This will hit everyone, not just the universities themselves. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
