The Trust made a splash on the Cranborne Chase this winter ๐Ÿ’ฆ.

Blocking this historically perched and channelised reach of winterbourne will encourage it to spill into the floodplain, re-wetting meadows and creating new complex ephemeral channels.

Giulio Biondi Tim Sykes ventured deep into nooks and crannies across the South Downs to bother aquatic invertebrates lurking in our hidden headwaters, then Jamal Kabir ๐Ÿฆ‹ Kieran Gething found the story in the data: specialist species galore! Great to see this out ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

Fantastic work Teresa Silverthorn : another excellent piece from her INRAE Lyon-Grenoble Auvergne-Rhรดne-Alpes EcoFlowS, demonstrating how contribute to C cycling and CO2 evasion. Nice collaboration with colleagues from Drying River Networks and Climate Change. Stay tuned for her upcoming PhD defence!

Humans have a long history of modifying rivers, in the past water meadows were a means to provide livestock with โ€˜the early biteโ€™, by rerouting/ straightening the channel to the edges of a meadow. Farmers could โ€˜drownโ€™ the meadow bringing on early fresh grasses for their sheep.

Wonderful winterbournes
They may not always look amazing, but they are! Even when dry for many months of the year the riverbed, the plants that remain & tiny hidden invertebrates are all integral to the winterbourne being a functioning ecosystem.

'Winterbournes are the powerhouse of our chalkstreams. The moment they start to flow water species colonise and drift downstream to supply the whole river system with new organisms; the moment they dry they become an entirely new habitat.' Well said Charlotte Hitchmough Action for the River Kennet (ARK)!

Post 3 Changing Weather Patterns
Now back in its historic channel, the Og is more resilient to more extreme weather patterns.
Rewiggled rivers, like our Og project slow the flow through the catchment.
The ecological benefits are already evident, look at the lapwing !!!

Natural Flood Management
Making space for water, storing it safely in the landscape is something that needs to be addressed across the country, as we face more extreme weather events.
1 NFM measure is reconnecting rivers to their floodplain, like our Og Rewiggling project.

Re-wiggling?
Freeing rivers from the artificial constraints imposed on them in the past by humans brings multiple benefits, from reducing downstream flooding to wins for wildlife.
Our River Og Rewiggling project - 1,000 metres of the Og has been returned to its natural path.
