Likewise, catching neutrinos from a core-collapse supernova — which could leave behind a black hole — might shed light onto one of the greatest mysteries surrounding these elusive particles: their mass!

It's #BlackHoleWeek ! #DidYouKnow that the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment will be able to detect neutrinos from a core-collapse supernova in the Milky Way? Such an event could leave behind either a neutron star or a #blackhole .

Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment DUNE will consist of two neutrino detectors placed in the world’s most intense neutrino beam. One detector will record particle interactions near the source of the beam, at Fermilab. A second, much larger, detector will be installed more than a kilometer underground SanfordLab.
Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment DUNE will pursue three major science goals:
🔎Find out whether neutrinos are the reason the universe is made of matter
🤝Look for subatomic phenomena that can move us closer to a unification of forces
🌌Watch for neutrinos emerging from an exploding star

Tantalum-180m could have a radioactive decay lifetime many times longer than the age of the universe. Researchers in the MAJORANA Collaboration are working SanfordLab to measure this decay and examining what it means for physics: energy.gov/science/np/art…
#ICYMI : CERN shared an exciting update for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment! A prototype for DUNE, fittingly called ProtoDUNE, has begun liquid argon filling. 🙌
