We can always find “evidence” to support our beliefs. But the faster and more reliable way of getting closer to the truth is to try to prove ourselves wrong.

I was lucky to have experienced the total eclipse with friends and colleagues at the Center for Inquiry in Buffalo. It was truly a wondrous experience.

Thanks to Eric Shaver for the conversations and that inspired this post.

It’s still shocking to me how triggered some people get by the suggestion to recognize your limitations.

Intellectual humility is a virtue. We all have different areas of expertise, and that’s a good thing. We can’t all know everything.

Of all the mass hysterias, shrinking penises have to be the most fascinating.

(Dmitri apparently needed attention again when I was recording 🤷‍♀️😻)

What’s wrong with “doing your own research”?

It requires expertise in the topic and an awareness of your biases and motivations.

Confirmation bias, misplaced trust, limited knowledge, & overconfidence is the perfect storm for being misled.

It’s true that everyone has a right to opinion. However, “I’m entitled to my opinion,” is often used to shield an unsupported position. And being entitled to your opinion doesn’t mean you’re right, or that anyone needs to take your opinion seriously.

This toolkit combines essential elements from science and critical thinking. I use it to teach my students the process of science and how to critically evaluate claims.

Thanks for the share!

Misinformation is ubiquitous. To protect yourself, learn to recognize the techniques used to mislead and your own vulnerabilities.

The more we’ve sacrificed, the more we’ve spent, the more we’ve been mocked, and the more we’ve staked our reputation, the harder it is to admit we were wrong.

And so we don’t.

The best thing we can do is to avoid being fooled in the first place.
