Daarom adviseren we om 🇺🇦 op langere termijn te blijven steunen, contingency plans te maken voor als Amerikaanse steun wegvalt, de defensie-industrie in zowel Europa als in Oekraïne op te bouwen maar ook 'vangrails' en voorwaarden voor duurzame oorlogsbeëindiging te creëren. /end

Voor Europa brengt een Russische overwinning echter zeer hoge kosten met zich mee op meerdere dimensies. Het is dus te verkiezen om wel voor langere termijn en significant te blijven steunen om dat scenario af te wenden - zelfs als de Amerikanen niet meer meedoen. /5

Het kan namelijk zo zijn dat een toekomstige Amerikaanse regering besluit dat een 'protracted conflict' waarin ze geen steun meer hoeven te leveren - of zelfs een Russische overwinning - voor hen te verkiezen is boven een Oekraïense overwinning. /4

Nu delen Tim Sweijs en ik een passie voor speltheorie en konden we het niet laten een rational choice model te bouwen waarin we de keuzes voor VS en Europa tegen elkaar afzetten. Sterk versimpelde weergave van de werkelijkheid uiteraard, maar lees verder... /3

Belangrijkste conclusie: goed nieuws dat VS voorlopig nog blijven steunen, maar als ze dat in de toekomst niet meer doen is het voor Europa toch aan te raden wèl te blijven steunen - zelfs als dat betekent dat een 'protracted conflict' de enige haalbare uitkomst is. /2
