In A&D Journals, we present one of the pioneering studies of #Alzheimer blood biomarkers in a cohort from the #Caribbean region.
Delighted to have worked on this with the Tobago Health Study group.

In Nature Communications, we validate plasma BD-tau as AD-type N marker:
- BD-tau is amyloid driven & assoc. w/ atrophy;
- Abnormal p-tau & BD-tau confers faster cognitive decline and atrophy;
- BD-tau is less responsive to kidney fxn effects.

In A&D Journals, we describe a new method for tau aggregates:
- specific to soluble/solubilized tau aggregates vs. monomers;
- applies to Alzheimer brain-derived homogenates🧠; and
- increases with Braak staging.
Next step: human CSF & blood 🩸

Brain-derived tau increases immediately after severe TBI and demonstrates utility to predict clinical outcomes.
Great collaboration with Göteborgs universitet / University of Gothenburg scientists and clinicians.

We provide further preanalytical characterization of brain-derived tau (BD-tau) 🩸
~ 40% ⬆️ levels in EDTA plasma vs. paired serum.
Reagent batch changes do not affect assay performance and longitudinal trajectories.

Check out this really cool publication from Bruna Bellaver and Pascoal Lab showing that astrocyte reactivity links amyloid and tau pathologies in #Alzheimers . nature.com/articles/s4159…
Great collaboration with Dr Emily Hill investigating functional electrophysiological effects of tau protein in human CSF. actaneurocomms.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.11…
🚨New paper alert in Neurology: Here, Pâmela Lukasewicz showed that changes in plasma p-tau181 and NfL have the potential to be used as surrogate biomarkers in large scale clinical trials targeting preclinical AD. João Pedro Ferrari-Souza Tharick Pascoal

I am delighted to note that the podcast I recorded for #DementiaMatters at Wisconsin ADRC was 'the most popular and most downloaded' episode of 2022. Thank you Nathaniel Chin for hosting me, and for your service to the #Alzheimers community. #ENDALZ
