If we want Britain to have a future, we have to build it. Building too few homes has left us paying more for less - our housing offers the worst value for money of any advanced economy. Ridiculously we're living in smaller homes than New Yorkers. Preorder: penguin.co.uk/books/461720/g…

Tom is not wrong. Graduate wages in Britain have done so badly because economic (productivity) growth (and therefore wage growth) has been truly terrible. The rising minimum wage has only partially protected the lowest earning non-grads

In 2023 pay for British graduates in their early thirties was staggeringly still 16 per cent below 2007 levels

Announcing a spending cut is not the same as reducing spending, let alone achieving value for taxpayers’ money theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

I for one am shocked that the Labour candidate won:
- in London
- when there’s a Conservative govt
- and Labour is way ahead in national polls
Should have been a VERY high evidence bar for thinking this was close

1pm BBC news still reporting “evidence that London closer than expected” despite literally zero evidence - now or at any point over past 24hrs

That would be an odd take. What these results really tell us is that not much has changed since Liz Truss did what she did to the country and the Conservative brand/vote share

This should be obvious - Hartlepool isn't magically turning back into a Labour heartland. It's what a marginal seat looks like in the 2020s.

Such odd takes around today. The truth is:
- on any objective measure these are terrible results for the Conservatives
- Rishi Sunak was always going to make it the general election. A few MPs wishing for one doesn't get you a coup just months out from a GE
