Over the Virginia Creeper Trail’s 34-year history, no single person is more synonymous with the trail than Lawrence -- arguably folks knew more about Lawrence than the trail itself.

Beginning in 1990, at age 59, Lawrence began his almost daily trek from Abingdon to Whitetop Station and back.

Over the ensuing years, Lawrence logged a breath-taking 192,600 miles on the Creeper Trail – over 80% of the distance from Earth to the moon!

Lawrence’s feat was hidden by his humble nature and kind smile.
He never met a stranger and was the first to stop to assist a visitor or local user with a flat tire or other bike repair on each of his 68-mile round trips, so much so that with time Lawrence became known as

Lawrence served on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Creeper Trail Conservancy for over two decades, bringing valuable insights on trail conditions and his experience as a trail user to the Board’s attention. 4/8

For the last 20 years, the Conservancy has sponsored a “Ride with the Legend” each year during the Virginia Highlands Festival, and though Lawrence has not been able to lead the Ride recently, the celebration of his contributions and accomplishments continues annually. 5/8

Several years ago, as Lawrence’s fame grew, VDOT honored Lawrence by including him in the “State Bicycle Map”, one of his proudest accolades.

Lawrence’s passing, just three weeks shy of his 92nd birthday, is an opportunity for appreciation and reflection on the impact and inspiration he provided each of us through the years. He will be deeply missed.
