Leafing through the dendrochronology in the latest VAG Journal. Noted the Old White Hart, Henley (Oxon), has been dated to 1391.

As a purpose-built inn, it would be a genuine contender to be the oldest pub in the country if it hadn't closed in 2008.

Its now a Zizzi.

Thos Jas Montgomery pictured at the front door of his wonderfully maintained one room dwelling.

However, this sturdy little structure should not be confused with the notorious 'cabin' of the pre-Famine 1841 census.

Recording a smoke-blacked mediaeval roof in Nottinghamshire last September. I'll be talking about the experience of being a buildings archaeologist online next week, 22 May. It'll be the last talk I'll be doing for a long, long time so please do join us 🙂

A fascinating part of beekeeping history.
Coming Soon - our new website aims to provide a wealth of information on bee boles and other beekeeping structures that were used in the past to provide shelter for skeps of honey bees.

Parallel lines and a daub of red. Can't put my finger upon why this little building in the small coastal town of Newport, Pembrokeshire lifts the spirits - quite sublime. Vernacular at its best.

A really informative day yesterday. I learnt lots, from graffiti of the East Riding horse lads (think my Whitby grandfather might have started out as one?) thru to medieval paintings in Pickering church. What a thriving group YVBSG is!

A rare survival: the Parish House, Baltonsborough, Somerset. This The Landmark Trust ‘church house’ was built shortly before the Reformation for parish meetings, feast, ales, etc. 500 yrs on parish meetings still happen here. A little charmer.

The Guildhall at Thaxted is so wonderfully jettied, it’s almost like an upside-down wedding cake!

This Grade I listed building is timber-framed and plastered with an exposed frame. The double range hipped roof only adds to the striking symmetry.

The Old Wellington Inn and Sinclair’s Oyster Room in Manchester were once a house, built around the mid-16th century.

This photograph was taken in 1971 when the building was underpinned and raised to fit the new street level. It was later moved as Shambles Square was developed.

This apple store for nearby Ambleside Hall was built over Stock Beck to avoid land tax. It is said that at some time a family with 6 children lived in its 2 rooms. VAG

Relief work is when a flint is laid in a combination with another material or a different style of flint. It is a very effective way of using the maximum potential of the material in terms of texture and form. #itsallinthebook#flint

Tomorrow's online talk will look at the archaeology of staircases. They are not just a way to access different floors in a house but tell us lots about social history and attitudes of the times they were used.

Brick nogging was popular as an infilling material in timber-framed buildings. Often used to show off improving fortunes, some of it is highly decorative!

We think it’s pretty charming. What do you think?
