DuckDB was recently covered in Andy Pavlo (@[email protected])'s Advanced Database Systems course at CMU. The lecture covers DuckDB's history, internals, and integration with other systems.

I am excited to announce that I will start my PhD in database systems at Wisconsin DB Group and work with Xiangyao Yu beginning Fall 2024! I'm super grateful to everyone who has supported me along the way :)

My #1 PhD student Matt Butrovich successfully completed his PhD defense. Thanks to the committee (@pateljm billions of packets Sam Madden). Matt's thesis is on accelerating databases with eBPF (telemetry, proxies, OLTP stores).

Interesting product on automated database tuning using AI OtterTune

TIL about another PickleDB (docs.rs/pickledb/). This one is in Rust and is inspired by the orig Python PickleDB (patx.github.io/pickledb/).

It's okay to build a new DBMS based on an existing but don't copy the same name too! So many obvious choices (GherkinDB, CucumberDB).

One other point. For OLTP, distributed databases are rarely needed. Single host databases (+replicas) are enough for a large % of the market.
