Somebody is using CMU Database Group's Advanced Database Systems course as evidence for their stock scheme against Snowflake. Unfortunately this person doesn't know what they are talking about. I'm slightly concerned that my lecture wasn't clear enough for students: youtu.be/NhWp1bTG0Cw
DuckDB was recently covered in Andy Pavlo (@[email protected])'s Advanced Database Systems course at CMU. The lecture covers DuckDB's history, internals, and integration with other systems.

I am excited to announce that I will start my PhD in database systems at Wisconsin DB Group and work with Xiangyao Yu beginning Fall 2024! I'm super grateful to everyone who has supported me along the way :)
My #1 PhD student Matt Butrovich successfully completed his PhD defense. Thanks to the committee (@pateljm billions of packets Sam Madden). Matt's thesis is on accelerating databases with eBPF (telemetry, proxies, OLTP stores).
You have 60 days to hire him. Expect fierce competition.
Abigale Kim (Abigale Kim) will talk about Anarchy in the Database: A Survey and Evaluation of Database Management System Extensibility' at PGConf.dev

Very grateful and honored to receive the 2024 Sloan Research Fellowship. Many thanks to my students, collaborators, and mentors. Excited to push the frontier of next-gen databases! #SloanFellow
Four SCS faculty, Nathan Beckmann, Aaditya Ramdas, billions of packets and Virginia Smith have been named 2024 Sloan Research Fellows.
Ever wondered how isolation levels work? How transactions are implemented?
I’ve spent the last few months going deep and Andy Pavlo (@[email protected])’s CMU course is very approachable and is the best of the best. Also what’s even better is it’s free. youtu.be/ht8Tx6DWn_E?si…
Thrilled to tie with Conor Power for best talk at the CIDR 2024 Gong Show!! We are now proud owners of movie posters autographed by the “King of Databases” aka Mike Stonebraker. Thank you Andy Pavlo (@[email protected]) for organizing!
Andy Pavlo (@[email protected])'s overview of why NewSQL didn't take off is good stuff for anyone who follows database startups.
One other point. For OLTP, distributed databases are rarely needed. Single host databases (+replicas) are enough for a large % of the market.
