This is a media problem as much as anything else. Too many news outlets (NYT, NBC, and WPost in particular) have gotten pulled into school culture wars (or amplified them).

After we reported on the case of a 15-year-old roofer who fell and died during his first day on the job, the Department of Labor began investigating.

Now they've settled with the Alabama roofing company that sent him up 50 feet with no safety gear, but for just a $117,000 fine.

NYC officials say budget cuts are having minimal impact on services - but one cut will hit NYC students right in the stomach: a $60m slash to school foods will mean a thinned-out menu in Feb., w/ no more cookies, chicken tenders, dumplings + more: chalkbeat.org/newyork/2024/0…

DCR crews and state police cleared out encampments under the BU bridge today. Around 8 people live here, most say they're on waitlists for housing and will set up camp elsewhere or eventually return. Most say they fear theft, mistreatment or separation in temporary shelters.

Parents: Make a commitment in 2024 to KNOW how your kid is doing in school. IGNORE GRADES. Ignore teacher reports. Trust NOTHING other than what your kid can demonstrate. Illiteracy WILL negatively affect your child’s future. Make sure your child is achieving. Know for yourself.
